Our structural timber base (STB)

Every high-quality, long-lasting garden building requires a firm, level foundation, and Johnsons guarantees this with our proprietary structural timber base (STB), included as standard in our Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Executive installation packages.

Our STB is a tried-and-tested post-and-beam system engineered for maximum stability and longevity. We concrete chunky, imported 4″x 4″ timber posts into the ground every square metre. These posts are pressure-treated and tanalised to a CLS-C/24 grade for ultimate protection against rot and decay. Each post is sunk deep into the earth, typically between 18″to 24″, and securely encased in concrete.

Once the posts are secure, we construct a solid and sturdy framework on top, using an impressive 200 to 300 heavy-duty coach screws to build the base. This elevated design achieves two key benefits:

By investing in this professional, robust foundation, we ensure your garden room remains level, stable, and protected for decades to come.

The advantages of our STB

You might be wondering about a concrete foundation, but with Johnsons, a concrete pad is not required.

In fact, our proven Structural Timber Base (STB) offers significant advantages over a traditional concrete method, ensuring a superior, more efficient build.

Many competitors insist you arrange for a concrete pad before they even arrive, usually because they lack the expertise to install a suitable timber base themselves. We install six to eight garden rooms daily, and we are experts in the entire process, from the base up. We’ve been using our tried-and-tested STB methodology for over twenty years, and we take full responsibility for its construction.

Here is why our STB is the smarter, better choice for your garden room:

By choosing Johnsons, you eliminate the hassle of having to find and coordinate another contractor to lay a concrete pad, a task many general tradesmen often find inconvenient or not cost-effective. We handle the entire process seamlessly.
